Change in data population

  • The total number of Shopify websites increased by 0.01% on both mobile (~5K) and desktop (~4K).
  • New themes added this month: Lollipop, Satoshi, Start, Beautify, Purity, Couture.
  • Themes dropped due to not enough data: Machina.
  • I now show 322 (up from 317) total themes. 224 have performance data for mobile devices and 192 for desktop devices.

Shopify overall performance changes

Here are the median, min, and max performance numbers on mobile for all the Shopify themes measured on mobile devices:

image.png (For a more accessible version, see it live on the website: Aggregations).

Mobile performance improved by 0.5 percentage points and dropped on desktop by 0.4 percentage points. The improvement on mobile was driven by LCP as both CLS and INP got worse. For desktop, all individual metrics actually improved, so this is a case where themes are having a hard time hitting good numbers on all three metrics at the same time.

Update on new flagship Shopify theme Horizon

Horizon is still struggling with performance. I don't think they are actively improving it at the moment so it might be a while before we see any movement. The poor performance is driven by LCP and INP which are arguably the 2 most important web vitals metrics. It struggles with all steps in loading speed - TTFB, FCP, and LCP. On mobile, it is ranked 207th out of 224 themes with data. It's doing a bit better on desktop at 45th out of 192.

This is unfortunate as Horizon continues to grow and take over marketshare from faster themes. See full data on the Horizon theme page.

All of the Horizon variations are now in the rankings, and all perform similarly to Horizon.

Most improved themes

For mobile devices, these themes had the most improvement in passing all Core Web Vitals. Last month, these were all within the Horizon family. This month, none of them are which backs up my theory that Shopify is no longer actively working to improve Horizon:

  1. Agile: 9.1 points (54 origins)
  2. Andaman: 8.3 points (86 origins)
  3. Kidu: 8.3 points (50 origins)
  4. Electro: 7.1 points (152 origins)
  5. Charge: 5.8 points (259 origins)

For desktop devices, these themes improved the most:

  1. Ultra: 12.6 points (55 origins)
  2. Startup: 7.8 points (98 origins)
  3. Luxe: 7.6 points (96 origins)
  4. Foodie: 5.7 points (93 origins)
  5. Mobilia: 4.8 points (131 origins)

When themes on these lists have a small number of origins/market share, some of the improvements could be due to the underlying population of websites changing.

Highest market growth

As a reminder, the market share numbers calculated in Theme Vitals are not the same as number of installs. Here, we’re calculating market share based on the number of origins (websites/domains) in CrUX. CrUX only shares data for websites that reach a certain threshold of popularity. This threshold sometimes changes. To learn more, check out the methodology page for CrUX.

Growth in number of origins

The themes that already have the largest market shares usually have the highest growth in number of origins. This is the first time that the new flagship theme Horizon has broken into the top 5.

Mobile

All are in the Horizon family:

  1. Horizon: 1804
  2. Savor: 568
  3. Atelier: 352
  4. Tinker: 331
  5. Vessel: 268

Desktop

Only Prestige and Concept are non-flagship:

  1. Horizon: 616
  2. Dawn: 563
  3. Savor: 195
  4. Prestige: 191
  5. Concept: 164

Percent growth in origins

Raw growth is interesting but usually focuses too much on the existing themes with high market share. Here, I show which themes are growing the fastest on a percentage basis. It's no surprise that Horizon is leading here.

Mobile

All are Horizon variations except Edge:

  1. Edge: 92.3%
  2. Ritual: 88.0%
  3. Tinker: 76.1%
  4. Savor: 73.5%
  5. Vessel: 73.2%

Desktop

All are Horizon variations:

  1. Ritual: 106.4%
  2. Vessel: 103.4%
  3. Tinker: 91.1%
  4. Atelier: 84.7%
  5. Savor: 81.6%
